Kerry Armstrong

Kerry Armstrong
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Kerry Armstrong (born 3 January 1958, Sydney) is a well-known Australian actress who is best known for her incredible flexibility within roles. She is the only actor to date to win two awards in one year at that Australian Film Institute Awards.

Biography
Armstrong has had various stints on television in the 1970s including a role in the first 44 episodes of Prisoner.

As was common among Australian actors of the time, Armstrong emigrated to the United States in 1981 to study at the Herbert Berghof acting school in New York City. Whilst there, she starred in Tom Stoppard's "Dalliance" and became part of the 'Actor's Gang' along with John Cusack and her boyfriend at the time, Tim Robbins. After working in the groups' plays - which she has stated were her favorite part of her time in America - Armstrong starred on Dynasty as Duchess Helena. She began receiving job offers - including a part on Saturday Night Live, and a three-picture deal, which she turned down.

In 1987, Armstrong's grandmother died and she returned to Australia, where she assumed that she would continue her rising career path. However, instead, she found less work in her native country than abroad. Around this time she met her third husband, Mac Gudgeon, with whom she had a son. They divorced a few years later.

In the early 1990s, Armstrong began acting in television series in Australia, including Ocean Girl, All Together Now and Halfway Across The Galaxy And Turn Left. However, after meeting builder Mark Croft and having twin boys with him, the lack of work - a problem that had been growing relatively common in the Australian industry - almost led her to quit acting.

This likely would have happened, had she not been offered a role in the cast of SeaChange in 1998, as Heather Jelly, the ever-devoted but long-suffering wife of corrupt local mayor Bob (John Howard). The role won her critical acclaim, mainstream attention and several awards.

When the series ended in 2000, Armstrong continued on with her theatre work and also led the cast of Lantana, the award winning Ray Lawrence film also starring Anthony LaPaglia, Barbara Hershey, Geoffrey Rush, Glenn Robbins and Vince Colosimo.

Not only did Armstrong win both the IF Award and the Australian Film Institute Award for this performance, but — the same year — she won another AFI, for final season of SeaChange, making her the first actress to win two AFI awards in one year.

In 2002 she joined the cast of medico-legal drama MDA on ABC alongside Jason Donovan and Shane Bourne. However, the low wages of the Australian television industry meant that working on one television show was not viable enough and so Armstrong left the series at the end of its second season. In the series her character, Dr. Ella Davis, left the firm that was the focus of the show.

Armstrong's most recent role was a small part in the low-budget film The Oyster Farmer.

Relationship with the media
Armstrong has long been known for her outspoken personality. She works for several charity organizations, has publicly opposed the War in Iraq — in one instance sitting on the steps of the Victorian Parliament in a purple bra to gain attention.

On 29 August 2004, Armstrong gave an extraordinary interview to the Sunday Telegraph in which she attacked singer Kylie Minogue and actress Nicole Kidman and their contemporaries for damaging the Australian and international entertainment industries by lowering standards. Armstrong expressed disdain at the fact that the industry - particularly the Academy Awards - gave praise to beauty rather than talent, expressing scorn at Minogue, Kidman, and others such as Gwyneth Paltrow and Halle Berry; while expressing admiration for actors such as Meryl Streep and Cate Blanchett. However, in a July 2005 interview with The Sydney Morning Herald, Armstrong claimed that she was misrepresented in that article.

Ruth Cracknell

Ruth Cracknell
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ruth Cracknell AM (6 July 1925 – 13 May 2002), Australian theatre and television actress, is one of Australia's most recognized and well-loved character actresses. She was known variously as 'Crackers', 'Dame Crackers' and 'Dame Ruth', throughout a career spanning 56 years.

Early Life
Cracknell was born in 1925 in the town of Maitland, in New South Wales, daughter of Charles and Winifred Cracknell. When Ruth was four years old, the family moved to Sydney.

She was educated at North Sydney Girls High School, and after graduating, worked at the Ku-ring-gai Council as a clerk.

At seventeen, Cracknell was taken to the theatre by a friend. She immediately wanted to become an actor, and joined the Modern Theatre Players drama school.

Career
Cracknell's first acting jobs were in radio. By 1946, she was performing five episodes of radio plays a week. She also performed on stage with the Independent Theatre Company. In 1948, Cracknell joined the John Alden Company and had roles in King Lear, Measure for Measure and The Tempest. In 1952, at the age of twenty-seven, she left Australia to work in London for two years.

Cracknell married Eric Phillips on 25 June 1957, and together they had three children, Anna, Jane and Jonathan. Unlike many women of the time, she did not retire, and continued to act.

Cracknell appeared in many Australian film and TV productions, including the award-winning ABC-TV dramatistion of Ethele Turner's Australian children's classic Seven Little Australians, but she is probably most famous for her role in the ABC television series Mother and Son. Written by Geoffrey Atherden and loosely based on the cult Carl Reiner film Where's Poppa?, Mother and Son first screened in 1984, ran for six seasons over nine years, and was often repeated.

Cracknell played an elderly woman, Maggie Beare, who was slowly becoming senile. She was cared for by her long-suffering younger son Arthur (Garry McDonald), to whom she was often indifferent but also dependent on, and whom she often cynically played off against her self-centred older son (Henri Szeps) and daughter-in-law (Judy Morris).

Ruth appeared in over twenty films and television series, including The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith (1978), the miniseries Seven Little Australians (1973) and Play School (throughout the 1960s).

Elle Macpherson

Elle Macpherson
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Elle Macpherson (born March 29, 1964, Cronulla, New South Wales, Australia) is an Australian supermodel and actress. Her nickname is “The Body”.

Born Eleanor Gow in Sydney, Australia, Macpherson was the eldest of four children. Her parents divorced when she was fourteen years old and her mother later married Neil MacPherson. Macpherson then changed her last name for her stepfather's. She studied one year of Law in the University of Sydney.

While vacationing in Aspen, Colorado Macpherson was discovered and signed to Click Model Management. Macpherson became an international star through her appearance in ELLE magazine—every issue, for six straight years. At 21, she married Gilles Bensimon, a french photographer and creative manager of ELLE. Eventually she gained even more exposure through Sports Illustrated magazine’s annual swimsuit issue. She appeared on the cover a record four times, including three straight years.

By 1986, her popularity has increased sufficiently for Time magazine to run a cover entitled “The Big Elle”. The Australian government simultaneously offered her a post on the tourist commission as an unofficial ambassador.

Macpherson made her movie debut playing an artist's model in the 1994 film Sirens, which also starred Hugh Grant and Sam Neill. Macpherson gained 9 kilograms (20lbs) for the part to more closely resemble the 1930s models of the day. She surprised fans and critics by appearing unabashedly in numerous nude scenes, earning her top billing for the film above more established actors (in fact, all the female characters in the movie appeared nude at least once in the film).

MacPherson reenacting Brigitte Bardot's famous picture on the cover of Playboy magazineIn 1999, Macpherson appeared in five episodes of the sitcom Friends as Joey's roommate—girlfriend Janine Lecroix.

Macpherson went on to film Jane Eyre with William Hurt and has also appeared alongside Ben Stiller and Sarah Jessica Parker in If Lucy Fell.

Macpherson is the most financially successful of all the world's supermodels. A 1997 estimate placed her net assets at $40.3 million. Cindy Crawford was a relatively close second with $37.7 million.

Understandably, Macpherson is incredibly popular in her home country of Australia. In 1999, she became the first living Australian entertainer to be put on a postage stamp.

Elle is a partner in the Fashion Café restaurant, along with fellow models Claudia Schiffer, Christy Turlington and Naomi Campbell, and is the owner of a successful lingerie brand, Elle Macpherson Intimates, which is manufactured by New Zealand company Bendon. She uses her fame to assist many charities, including those of AIDS and homelessness.

Macpherson has two sons, Arpad Flynn Busson and Aurelius Cy Andre. Arpad's father is Arpad "Arkie" Busson, a Swiss financier. Macpherson and Busson were engaged in 2002 after a six-year relationship. Their relationship ended in July of 2005.

Mark Anthony Philippoussis (born November 7, 1976, Melbourne, Australia) is an Australian tennis player of Greek heritage (turned professional 1994) currently residing in Florida, USA. Coached by his father, Nick, Philippoussis, and a right-hander, he has played tennis since he was six years of age. He was briefly coached by former 1987 Wimbledon champion Pat Cash during his junior years, which ended in an acrimonious split. Philippoussis' style of play is to hit every shot hard, and this accomplished by his amazing natural ability. Many players hit serves hard, but only Mark Philippoussis can hit a groundstroke at the same speed. This is what separates him from other players like Andy Roddick, and he is widely regarded as the hardest hitter in the history of the game, next to Lew Hoad.

Patrick Rafter

Patrick Rafter
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Patrick Michael Rafter (born December 28, 1972) is a former World No. 1 tennis player from Australia. He is best remembered as a two-time men's singles champion at the US Open, and a two-time runner-up at Wimbledon. Rafter was well known for his attacking serve and volley game and possessed one of the finest volleys in the game.

Rafter was born in Queensland and is third-youngest in a family of nine children. He began playing tennis at the age of five with his father and three older brothers. In April 2004, Rafter married his longtime girlfriend Lara Feltham (with whom he has a son, Joshua,) at a resort in Fiji. Their daughter, India, was born in the summer of 2005.

Tennis Career
Rafter turned professional in 1991, and won his first career singles title in 1994 in Manchester. Prior to 1997, this was the only top-level singles title he had won.

Rafter's major breakthorugh came in 1997 at the US Open, when he reached the final against Greg Rusedski and won in four sets to claim his first Grand Slam title.

In 1998, he reached the US Open final again and defeated fellow Aussie player Mark Philippoussis in four sets. He also won five other tour singles titles that year.

In July 1999, Rafter reached the World No. 1 men's singles ranking. However he held it for just one week, making him the shortest-reigning World No. 1 in tour history.

Rafter won the Australian Open men's doubles title in 1999 (partnering Jonas Björkman).

In 2000, Rafter reached the men's singles final a Wimbledon where he faced Pete Sampras who was gunning for a record-breaking seventh title. Rafter made a strong start to the match and took the first set. But after the match he claimed that he had "choked" part way through the second set, and was then not able to get back into his game. Sampras won in four sets.

In 2001, Rafter made the Wimbledon final again. He faced Goran Ivanisevic, who had reached the Wimbledon final three times before but had slid down the world rankings to No. 125 following injury problems. After a titanic five-set struggle, lasting just over three hours, Ivanisevic prevailed 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 2-6, 9-7.

Rafter was on the Australian Davis Cup teams which lost in the final in 2000 (to Spain) and 2001 (to France). He was ironically unable to play in the 1999 Davis Cup final – where Australia beat France to win the cup – because of injury (though he won important matches in the earlier rounds to help the team qualify).

Rafter was on the Australian teams which won the World Team Cup in 1999 and 2001.

Rafter retired from the professional tour at the end of 2002. During his career he won 11 singles titles and 10 doubles titles.

Rafter returns to the courts annually to play World Team Tennis for the Philadelphia Freedoms.

Naomi Watts

Naomi Watts
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Naomi Watts (born September 28, 1968) is an English-born Australian actress and producer.

Watts was born in Shoreham-by-Sea, West Sussex, England, where she lived until the age of eight. Her parents, Peter and Myfanwy Watts had separated when she was four years old, and when she was seven her father died. Following her father's death, her mother relocated the family to the town of Llangefni (more specifically Llanfawr Farm, a district of Llangefni), in Northern Wales, where they lived with Naomi's grandparents, Hugh and Nikki Roberts, although her mother occasionally moved the family around Wales and England, usually to follow boyfriends, but she always ended up returning to Llangefni. She lived there until she was 14. Then, during a trip to Australia, her mother became convinced that there was "the land of opportunities" and moved the family to Sydney in 1982. Her grandmother, Nikki, was Australian, which made it easier to obtain the documentation necessary, since Naomi and her family were entitled to Australian citizenship.

Her father was a sound engineer with Pink Floyd and her mother is described by Watts as a hippie "with passive-aggressive tendencies" who used to threaten to send her and her brother to foster care in order to convince her grandparents to take care of the family, since her mother had no money after her father's passing.

In Sydney, she attended several acting schools (and in the very first lesson in the first school, she met Nicole Kidman, with whom she shared a taxi home from class). In 1986 she took a break from acting and went to Japan to work as a model, but the experience was fruitless, and Watts describes it as one of the worst periods of her life, which lasted for about four months. Upon returning to Australia, Watts went to work for a local department store and from there she went to work as assistant fashion editor with an Australian fashion magazine. She only returned to acting when a casual invitation from a colleague to participate in a small play rekindled her passion for the scenic arts and prompted her to quit her job and dedicate herself completely to making it as an actress.

She first appeared in television commercials and then the drama series Home and Away in 1988 in the role of Julie Gibson. Her first big break came with the 1995 movie Tank Girl with the part of Jet Girl.

In 2001, Watts appeared in David Lynch's Mulholland Dr., a performance which won high praise. The quality and size of Watts' roles improved after Mulholland Dr., and she starred in the highly successful US remake of The Ring, a Japanese horror movie. In 2004 she received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress for her performance in the film 21 Grams.

Lisa McCune (Born on February 19, 1971) is an Australian actress well-known for her television roles.

McCune shot to fame in January 1994 when, at just 22 she was cast as Constable Maggie Doyle in Blue Heelers. She played the role until the seventh season, during which time she won the Gold Logie Award For Most Popular Television Personality four times. When her character was killed in 2000, the "Who Shot Maggie Doyle?" story arc was the most watched in the series history, and to date her leaving the show is attributed as one of the major factors in the ratings slump that followed.

McCune followed up her television stint playing Mary Abacus in a telemovie adaptation of Bryce Courtenay's The Potato Factory (2000). Her next project, a "comeback" role in 2002, was the television series Marshall Law with Alison Whyte and former Blue Heelers cast member William McInnes. The series was critically panned, and ratings dropped significantly to ensure that it was cancelled after one season.

In 2004, McCune slowly began to return to television - first becoming the advertising face of Coles supermarkets, then hosting Seven Network shows such as The World Around Us and Forensic Investigators. McCune also starred alongside Matt Day in the acclaimed ABC telemovie Hell Has Harbour Views.

From September 1, 2005, McCune will guest star in a four-episode storyline on MDA alongside her former Blue Heelers co-star Paul Bishop.

McCune studied musical theatre at Edith Cowan University, and has appeared in a number of musicals and other stage productions around Australia, notably as Sally Bowles in Cabaret.
